Regulations & Licencing

  • Unlike America's 38,637 private investigators, the 10,000  plus, UK private investigators are not regulated by the government and do not require a licence to advertise or operate. There is no statutory licencing system or mandatory qualifications currently, so anyone can legally call themselves a private investigator.

  • However, AII private investigators comply with UK laws such as the Data Protection Act 2018 and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which sets boundaries on their activities.

  • Those members vetted and accepted by the Association of International Investigators opt into and abide by the strictest codes of conduct and those set by current laws.

  • Private clients, law firms and insurers hiring AII members do not risk being mislead by inexperienced or dishonest individuals. AII evidence gathering is admissible in UK courts.
